The Sea hammock is an installation created for Tokyo Midtown DESIGN TOUCH 2022, an annual design event held every autumn in Tokyo Midtown. The installation is in line with the event's theme of 'Circulating Design'. Since its debut, the hammocks have been set up and taken down at five different locations over three years, including Sakura hiroba in Osaka, Hibiya Park, Awaji Island and the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
The hammocks are made from recycled nylon fishing nets. By twisting 300 strands of these nets, they are upcycled into hammocks that retain the same strength as the original fishing nets. Through interactive play, we aim to raise awareness of the issue of marine litter, which negatively impacts marine environments and ecosystems. Plans are underway to install the hammocks in many more locations and we are in discussions with the playground equipment company JAKUETS to market the hammocks as 'playground furniture' to enhance urban outdoor spaces.
This time the installation is on "Umekita no Oka (Umekita Hill)”, offering a pleasant breeze and a view over the busy square. The experience of the hammocks varies greatly depending on the location; the hammocks really maximise the charm of their surroundings. As you swing in the hammocks and enjoy the view from the hill, we hope you will become more aware of the landscape and environment around you.
